Hotel Door Locks
The cost of fitting multiple doors with strong standard (keyed) locks
is an important design consideration for every private residence or
commercial building. In hotels and motels the sheer number of doors that
need locks can be staggering - easily reaching hundreds and even
thousands of individual lock mechanisms. Each door is important. Losing
track of a single key or failing to change just one compromised or
broken door lock can quickly result in employee or guest injury,
theft or vandalism of property, and resulting lawsuits, replacement
costs, and other consequences.
In the past manual keyed locks presented a challenge that required
on-site expertise and even a dedicated locksmith in large facilities.
Modern technology has eliminated this requirement with the advent of
computer controlled electronic door locks. But keypads have mechanical
features and can be damaged by vandalism or rough use. Those problems
have now been eliminated by the use of keyless electronic door locks
that use a proximity card, programmed on-site, to control access.
After keypads, the next generation of keyless hotel door locks used
magnetic swipe cars. While being cheap and easy to make, they lacked
some important features. Two features are the most troublesome (among
others). Since so many personal cards (drivers licenses, credit cards,
phone cards, etc.) contain magnetic strips, a typical wallet or purse
can be jammed with a dozen cards or more. Under the right conditions
these cards can come into contact with each other and effectively
de-magnetize (or scramble) each other, making one or both cards useless
or undependable.
Radio frequency proximity cards eliminate the problem with
demagnetization.
Proximity cards are cheap to keep on hand and can be programmed by
anyone. The process is fast and simple and requires only some software
and a small, dedicated hardware module. Cards can be programmed to
unlock a single door or a group of doors and even to allow access to
special locations on a card-by-card basis. These cards can
not be copied and expire automatically OR at managements' discretion.
